Data transformation accelerates origination workflows for BSR (British Solar Renewables)

How BSR transformed data to accelerate project origination

The Business Challenge

British Solar Renewables (BSR), one of the UK’s most active platforms in this space, understood that the real bottleneck wasn’t regulation or land, it was fragmentation. The teams were already sharp and experienced, but buried under a wave of data: over 100 files, across seven grid providers, delivered in incompatible formats, scattered from shapefiles to minute-by-minute SCADA logs.

Each project brought different assumptions. Each file had its quirks: missing links, overlapping nomenclature, inconsistent units. Reconstructing a usable dataset could take weeks, and by then, a competitor might already have seized the opportunity.

The solution wasn’t a new layer of tooling. It was a data foundation, built to reflect how origination actually happens on the ground.

The Solution

BSR and Graphite partnered to apply data engineering expertise, collecting and cleaning hundreds of raw datasets and through structured extraction, match scoring, and enrichment harmonised the data . Time formats were normalised (minute, daily, monthly), data hierarchies rebuilt and applied a unified logic to structure the data. This rebuilt the underlying data structure needed to automate analysis.

Once consolidated, the data became actionable. Data insights were extracted and overlaid in GIS tools, enabling quick saturation checks and forward-looking scenario planning.

With modelled data in place, BSR moved from reactive analysis to faster, more structured decision-making across its pipeline.

“Instead of spending days cross-checking files, we now get clear answers in hours. It’s changed how we work: we can screen, validate, and move without waiting on ad hoc analysis.”

– Grid Engineer, BSR

The Results

With structured, reliable data in place, BSR reduced assessment timelines from several weeks to just days. Development teams gained faster visibility into technical constraints and could align more easily around viable zones. Early clarity also helped reduce rework and streamline internal collaboration.

BSR continues to evolve its data foundation to support project planning. Public information from partners is now regularly processed and standardised, ensuring teams have access to consistent reference data as priorities shift. These capabilities help BSR maintain alignment across stakeholders and bring greater structure to development decisions.

“The data workflows we’re building help us stay aligned across teams and make planning discussions more grounded. It’s about working with better structure, not just more data.”

– Data Analyst, BSR
